Norfolk Young Walkers Group

Most of our regular walks take place in Norfolk and sometimes Suffolk. Norfolk is largely a flat county so the walking is quite easy! However, some walks are fairly long, so if you’re new to walking you may want to start with a shorter walk. The walks are generally between 8 and 13 miles (unless otherwise specified), shorter walks tend to take place during the winter months. The length of each walk is shown on the programme and on the Forum. If in any doubt about a particular walk, contact the walk leader with your queries.

Walking F.A.Q.

- What are the walks like?

Walks usually go ahead regardless of the weather, so rain and mud are likely. The weather can also change during the course of the day and as the walks take us into open countryside, it is likely we will be far from shelter too. Therefore walking boots or shoes and waterproof clothing are recommended. With warm clothing (plenty of layers), gloves, hats, scarf etc. or Sunscreen as appropriate to the time of year.

- What should I wear?

It is recommended that you bring a packed lunch and any other snacks that you feel are necessary to sustain you for the day. Depending on the walk we sometimes stop for a drink at a pub, but if we do, we don’t normally stay long enough to order food. In addition it’s essential to bring a bottle of water with you on all walks and maybe a flask of hot drink in the winter months.

- What about lunch?

You can go to a walk, without making contact first. However, as a courtesy it is helpful to let the walk leader know if you intend to go. This gives the walk leader an idea of numbers attending and also an opportunity to advise you of any last minute changes. If in doubt check the Forum for the latest information regarding a walk. Try to arrive at the meeting point at least five minutes before the advertised start time.

- Can I just turn up?

Generally dogs are allowed, but must be kept on a lead, as we often encounter farm animals. They must also be able to negotiate stiles and other obstacles. It is best to check with the walk leader if you wish to bring a dog.

- Are dogs allowed?

The meeting point for each walk is given on the Forum, together with directions. Owing to the rural nature of Norfolk the meeting points are usually at a car park, or near suitable car parking. Unfortunately these locations may not be accessible by public transport. Therefore we try to share lifts where possible, not only for the environmental reasons, but also helps to reduce congestion at the starting points. As members live all around Norfolk, there may be someone going your way! If you need a lift check the Forum or contact the walk leader.

- How do I get to the walk?
