I think this date is free?

This is a nice 24 mile easy circular route (tatled 'Churches, copses and country lanes')through the countryside of northeast Suffolk, starting and finishing at my house in Carlton Colville (distance to Norwich 25 miles A146)and taking in several villages as well as a glimpse of the coast at Covehithe, on mostly minor roads. Home made cake and tea at the end, as well as changing and showering facilities if required (if it's a small group, which it probably will be).

It's number 18 on this link, which has loads of other good cycle routes in our region. Click on the symbol where Lowestoft is and a 4 page PDF file gives info, pics, a map, etc.

This is the one I cancelled at the New Year but by March we shouldn't have to worry about icy roads, he says hopefully.

I will still be leading an as yet unplanned walk the next day on 7th March.

Everyone is welcome. I can even lend a gents hybrid bike.
If you would like to come please post before the day, because then I will know how much cake to make! I know from leading walks that many turn up without posting here, which is fine, but on this occasion it would be handy to know. Cheers.

Jon

Loved the day, Jon. Excellent exercise and gorgeous scenery. We had lunch in the ruins of a church from the 15th cent. near the much eroded cliffs at Coventhithe, and saw several other churches along the way, not to mention great variety of birdlife. Jon's colleague was indeed a wealth of information and it was also thanks to him that I made it through several hills! We were treated to 2 varieties of homemade cake at the end - all in all a lovely day.

Yes thanks Jonny was a great day out really enjoyed it and good to learn about the wildlife and countryside as we went along, thanks also for the tea and cake at the end rounded the day off nicely.

Well, what a fantastic cycle ride that was! Although it was cold 6 of us, including a couple of work colleagues and a son, had a great ride out into the Suffolk countryside and to the coast, with running commentary from my colleague John on the wildlife, plants and architecture as we went along. Thanks for coming everyone - it was really enjoyable. That said, although I will be cycling much more this year, and hopefully with some people from this group, I'd rather do it on private contacts from now on as too many people dropped out at very short notice, which also happened on the last canoe trip I organised on here last year, and which is a bit deflating to be honest.
Jonny Walker Posted - 05/03/2010 : 19:55:25
ok, but for future reference a bit more notice would have been nice for catering arrangements
Jane can't come as she is ill, so I think there will be about 6 of us, as a colleague of mine looks like coming.
I look forward to seeing you tomorrow. The forecast is for sunny intervals and quite cold. Rain earlier in the morning, but hopefully not after 11.

Hi Jonny, I'm afraid I won't be able to make this one now, but good luck with it all, and hope to make the next one.
Jonny Walker Posted - 02/03/2010 : 08:50:28
Meet at mine ready to leave at 11am. Come earlier, say, 10.30am, and there will be a cuppa for you.

I've sent emails to those above whose email addresses I have, as requested, so if Alan and Kev want to come along please send me an email via the site, then I will have your email in my gmail account and I'll send you a copy of what I've sent everyone else.

As 3 have dropped out (Liam, Julian and Scot) if anyone wants to replace them, come along.

Thanks.
Jonny Walker Posted - 20/02/2010 : 18:26:55
Yeah, I heard Liam can't make it so guessed you'd be the same. See you on another two wheeled adventure

Hi Jonny,
I hope this goes well. I'm looking to get myself a new bike so maybe I can attend the next cycling event.

PS on second thoughts, I was a bit quick to offer driving - not having driven with a tow bar etc., it might not be the best idea..!! Sorry.
Sil Posted - 17/02/2010 : 17:59:47
Hi all,

Thanks for all this Jon.

I'll make sure to bring lots of patches in case of punctures. I don't have the actual lever tools, but am sure there'll be a few repair kits around. I'll make sure to wear a neon yellow coloured vest.

I would offer lifts to save on parking space, but I don't have a bike rack or tow bar. If anyone can supply, I can drive from Norwich. Or, if anyone has these facilities and it makes sense in terms of direction, to drive via Unthank Rd in Norwich (to fetch me!), pls let me know. Otherwise I'll just bundle up the bike in my car (which I've managed before!).

Plenty of interest, and all above very welcome

I'm going to have to limit numbers now to those who have already said they'd like to come, as I think these numbers are all I can cater for as well as keep a manageable cycling group together.

I will send out an email soon giving contact details and directions as I don't want them on a public forum.

If you haven't been in contact with me via email before please do so asap so that I can write an email from my gmail account using my address book there. It would be nice to just have to do it once!

Just a word of caution: as long as the roads aren't icy we will be cycling the full route, no matter how rainy it is, so make sure you come prepared for that, and bring some dry clothing to change into afterwards, and make sure you can cycle the distance above snail's pace. There will be some stops to regroup and have a rest, but not every mile! This will be a leisurely cycle ride but I don't want to be overtaken by joggers The coast at Covehithe is quite beautiful so we'll have a longer break there and it's also the half way point.

It would be a good idea to arrange amongst yourselves a couple of puncture repair kits and I will bring mine. I will also have a pump. Parking in my neighbourhood is very limited so lift sharing would be helpful and more convenient to yourselves. Although I will be providing drinks and cake afterwards you might like to bring a small pack up and drink to take on the ride. You'll probably need a little something, as this ride is probably going to take this group up to 3 hours taking all things into consideration.

We will be cycling on some B roads and more minor, quiet tarmac roads, but traffic might come along at any stage and catch us by surprise, so I'd like us all to keep to the left and in single file, at least until we get off the B roads and onto the quieter roads. Even on the quieter roads, no cycling on the right, please. Leave room for speeding, half blind geriatrics coming around corners! It would be good if a few people were wearing something with high visibilty.

More later...looking forward to it

Hi Jon, hope it would be ok for me and my Penny Farthing to come along?

Jonny Walker Posted - 13/02/2010 : 23:30:37
Yeah, sure
liam_dsouza Posted - 12/02/2010 : 15:55:07
Hi Jon- is it OK if Michelle's brother Scott comes along to this as well?
Kev Posted - 08/02/2010 : 20:52:38
Hi, I think I can count myself in for this one as my first outing with the club. Kind of ironic to join a walking club and go cycling straight off, but never mind ! Kev.
Jonny Walker Posted - 07/02/2010 : 15:43:51
That's 6 in - I can cope with that, even a few more.
Parking is tight around my area so if people can lift share that would be good, otherwise you can park just down the road somewhere else on the housing estate.
Paula Posted - 06/02/2010 : 20:44:37
I'd love to join you on this Jon. Will have to do a few 'training rides' beforehand - my cycling muscles haven't been used for so long.....!
Ian.H Posted - 06/02/2010 : 10:44:02
Sounds good will come along, mine is also a road bike with thin tyre's. look forward to the cake.
Ian
Jonny Walker Posted - 05/02/2010 : 16:15:32
It's all on tarmac roads, so no worries there - my bike also has thin tyres. Just wear something bright to be seen - there will be a few cars on most of these roads.
Sil Posted - 05/02/2010 : 13:17:52
That's so nice of you to make cake!

This sounds great. If "minor roads" means mainly tarred roads, my bike should be ok - I got that impression from the link you included? My bike's (thin) tyres would be hopeless on anything but... I wouldn't want to hold anyone up if I had to wheel it along anywhere.
Emmab Posted - 04/02/2010 : 20:00:17
would love to, however i have not figured out how to get my bike in or on my car! :)

I like the sound of this- if I can wrangle that weekend off, I shall be there :)

(It was the cake that sold it to me)
julian.white Posted - 04/02/2010 : 15:59:45
Yay! I'll be there! (not looking forward to taking my new bike on the train though!)

And there's nothing else planned on that day to my knowledge, there is a night hike the weekend after though :)

julian.
