This would involve some cost, so just testing the waters to see if there would be any interest in a day out canoeing on the very lovely River Waveney around Bungay. Having canoed and kayaked all the way from west of Harleston to the sea I promise that the river around Bungay is one of the loveliest stretches and here you'll see kingfishers and other birds and the river here is fairly shallow and nice and clean so you can see fish swimming around. On hot days people even go for a swim.

The cost is £20 half day or £30 full day per canoe, 9am-6pm. As each canoe is for 2 people at least (some can carry 3, some even 4, as long as 2 are small adults or kids, same price) the cost isn't too bad at all, a tener at the most for a very nice day out. What they call half a day is only 3 hours and I think that's too short if you want to explore and have a leisurely picnic. The idea would be to take a picnic and if we could all bring stuff to share that would be even better.

This is the site:
http://www.outneymeadow.co.uk/canoe-hire.htm

Of course, all safety equipment is included so no one will drown

Lots of places to stop and have that picnic, as the river loops around Bungay Common, which is mostly pasture land.

You don't have to be an expert to handle these things and even if you're not it can add to the fun

I was thinking possibly Sat 6 June (don't think we have any walks then) but if people are interested the date can be changed to suit.

I forgot to add to my posting above.....

If anyone wants to impress their loved one ask Ian about his 'posh picnic'. I don't know what Jane thought but I was impressed.

Nothing that I've been informed of :)

If it's Saturday 8th august you're planning for, I'll be there :)

Jonny Walker Posted - 09/06/2009 : 17:29:51
Ah, thanks Julian...I suppose I should have looked harder
The weekend of 8/9 Aug is free on that calendar. Is anything else going on that weekend? If not, it looks a good bet for a day of canoeing. Sunday might find people more free, or do we reserve Sundays for walks?
julian.white Posted - 08/06/2009 : 23:41:53
Jon, go straight to www.norfolkywg.org.uk and the calendar is there :)

I also have a diary of all the events (and planned events not yet confirmed) if you wanted to check any date. (not that this prevented me double booking an event of my own next week!)

julian.

Good, that's 100% positive feedback
When I discover where the calendar of events is on this forum I'll try and pick a day before summer's out, to go to Geldeston Locks by canoe.
Ian.H Posted - 08/06/2009 : 20:57:37
Hi Jon, Thanks for organizing this, I agree it was a good fun day out
would definitely be up for a trip in the other direction.

Jon, thanks for a fantastic day - it was definitely worth the effort.
Great company, good laugh and even the weather behaved itself.

Let's hope we have more of the same tomorrow.
Jonny Walker Posted - 06/06/2009 : 20:32:49
ok, so 4 of us went out in 2 canoes and it was a lovely day, and we went as far as Earsham sluice and had lunch by the river there...parts of the journey were quite hard work where it was shallow and fast flowing, and there were one or two comical collisions with low bridges (one low as in about 6 inches clearance above the canoe, cue all kinds of limbo canoeing) and fallen trees, but all we enjoyed ourselves...we were out from just after 10 until almost 4 and got our money's worth out of the canoe hire...then a short drive to the Geldeston Locks for a well earned drink.
No one fell in and no one got injured, so we may do another trip this summer, in the other direction, portaging past 3 sluices to get to the Locks Inn for lunch and making our way back in the afternoon.
Jonny Walker Posted - 03/06/2009 : 14:03:18
us 3 are ok for 10, so we'll start without you by going for a short paddle in the other direction towards Bungay and come back for you, then we'll head west along the river.

don't forget your pack up!
Paula Posted - 03/06/2009 : 12:26:49
Apologies for not checking this earlier.

I'm still up for this and looking forward to it. Am surprised everyone else has dropped out of what will be a great day out.

Could I suggest a 10.30 start time? The weekends are the only time I can catch up on sleep and that extra half hour makes all the difference!
Jonny Walker Posted - 03/06/2009 : 12:24:01
ok, thanks, will let you know if i don't hear back by tonight...

Let me know if you need me to phone Paula.

Jonny Walker Posted - 03/06/2009 : 12:17:37
i don't want to mess the canoe hire people around so the sooner the better we know - email sent.
Jonny Walker Posted - 03/06/2009 : 12:13:01
Just waiting for a reply from Paula.
If she can come, it's on, but if she can't come there will only be 3 and I don't think it's worth doing anymore, as i'm not sure about 3 in a boat and the alternative is £30 I'd have to pay on my own, but you two could still go.
Jonny Walker Posted - 01/06/2009 : 06:11:00
ok, that's fine by me. Paula?

be prepared for sun and rain, don't forget food and drink, and wear old clothes.

bring a change of clothes and a towel, just in case!

if we stop for a picnic somewhere depending on where it is it might involve stepping into a few inches of water (at least for one person per boat) so be prepared to either get your feet wet or wear shoes that can go in the water.

let's hope for a nice sunny day
Ian.H Posted - 31/05/2009 : 08:58:34
Hi- Jane and I are still up for a full day, suggest 10am start time.
look forward to it.Ian
Jonny Walker Posted - 29/05/2009 : 18:36:06
Oh yeah, and if we are going, it's at the Outney Meadow caravan site.

Coming down from Norwich through Poringland and Brooke you'll hit the A143 at Ditchingham at a roundabout locally known as 'chicken roundabout' due to all the abandoned hens and cockerels that live on and around it.

Turn right and head to the next roundabout. The caravan site is on the right. Easy

Thanks for your message, Graham.

So it's me, Paula, Jane and Ian...?

I have booked 2 canoes for the day, which are available from 9.30am, but 10am or even 10.30am might suit people better.

I haven't had to pay a deposit, so there is still time to either back out of decide to go for only half a day, which I think is 3 hours from 9.30am. They won't book half a day for the afternoon, it would be the morning only.

So if you don't want to go please let me know asap and I'll cancel the canoes.

If you still want to go then I'll see you there. Please say what time you'd prefer to meet.

It's 30 quid a boat, so a day out will be 15 quid a person.

Hi John,

I'm really sorry that I've been pretty quiet on the forum recently.

I also feel pretty rubbish about pulling out of the canoe trip, especially as I have never explored the upper Waveney and was really looking forward to the trip.

Just recently I have been committing myself to quite a lot of different things and now they are all clashing!

apologies jon but i can't make this this weekend but would like to do it again, cheers Alan
Jonny Walker Posted - 23/05/2009 : 08:04:17
ok, it would be useful to have some confirmations or withdrawals from the following, as I will need numbers if I am going to book canoes:
Paula, Alan, Adele, Graham, Jane, Ian? Any others who want to come please post asap as I will have to decide soon whether to still do this trip or not.
