Hi,
I've spoken to the Hampshire equivalent of our group, their 20/30s walking group.
Would anyone be interested in principle in going down to Hampshire for a weekend in either July or August?
They do have an event, which they mentioned we could join, on 18th July which is a social event at Spitbank Fort (one of those defensive forts in the English Channel) - which clashes with one of our walks - but if people were interested, maybe some rearrangement could take place?
If people could post a vague interest (and any weekends they can't do in July/August) I'll try and get a date together in conjunction with them for a weekend of walking in Sunny Hampshire :)
Cheers,

I am keen to do this, it is great for groups in different areas to get together.
At the moment, I'm free every weekend in July, not free the first two weekends in August and then free again after that. I suspect that July might get a better turn out that August, but that is only a guess.

Having spoken again - their group have quite a lot of holidays away already planned for July which might make some dates awkward.
Not wanting to get in the way of David's walk - but would anyone be interested in going down on Friday 17th July 2009, going on a walk with their group in the day on Saturday, then having a joint social event on the Saturday night at Spitbank Fort, then another joint walk on the Sunday before driving back on Sunday evening?
If say four people would be very interested, I'd be happy to fill in the details of the weekend and confirm (and then others can add as their diaries/finances allow).
(this organising is very complex!)

Hi Julian,
This sounds great, I'm defo interested. Not too fussed about which weekend, but I'd prefer July as there will be fewer people on holiday.

Laurence has just confirmed that he would like to come too. Sounds like we might have a good number for this one.

Sounds like a great weekend. Not sure if I'll be able to make it though - depends on whether I have a job by then!
Has the Hampshire group mentioned what distance the walks will be?

Excellent, thanks for messages.
As I now have four people who are very likely to go, I've told Hampshire that we're up for this weekend and I'll start planning some details.
The Saturday night event (which they've e-mailed details of) is at Spitbank Fort (http://www.spitbankfort.co.uk). The cost would be 15 pounds including a boat out there, entertainment and chance to explore the building.
No mention has been made on the walk length Paula, but I shall enquire :)

I would like to come if possible....the only thing stopping me is a summer job committment, which will take priority as Ive limited funds ......(well if I'm lucky to find one in the given climate and transport_...though I'm sure Richard will organise costs/transport beforehand(be good if you could so I have some idea of total cost) looks ...it looks good fun....

Cheers mate :)
I've spoken again, and all remains good. We will need to book ourselves into the Spitbank Fort thing direct with the venue, I'll start doing that at the weekend.
They have kindly suggested:
http://www.accorhotels.com/gb/hotel-6462-etap-hotel-etap-hotel-portsmouth/index.shtml
Which is a hotel which costs 35 pounds for three people, but they will let me know of some more options in Portsmouth which are equally cheap.
I can't give estimates of petrol because I have not one clue as a non-driver! :) But I like cheap, so all my suggestions will probably veer that way!

In response to the query about whether there's a Baker's Oven nearby, I can confirm that there is.

Hi Jul, I am yet to do a walk however hope to make this Sunday. Regarding the break in Hampshire, yes I am very keen. Have had quite a lot going on lately so have not yet done a walk but am sure I will be a good regular member once I start - not sure I'm up for the Leg Stretchers yet though!!!!
Look forward to seeing you and the others on Sunday
Regards
Luce

I'm very well behaved otherwise :)

Hi Nicky (did u get my facebook email by the way?)
I don't think that they're set yet, but they won't be very long as the Saturday walk is followed by a social and on the Sunday we have to get back. I would doubt they're beyond 10 miles, but I will e-mail and check.
I'm going to consult with Richard about where is best to book (Hampshire have sent another idea) so that we can get those definites booked and still have provision for some last-minute additions.

OK, I need to progress the organisation of this now as Hampshire have organised a pub evening on the Friday and would like numbers, and we also need to book the fort (15 pounds each) for the Saturday night entertainment.
Working through the list, the names I have are (* denotes just a possible)
Richard Laurence Julian Andrew Paula * Alan * Andrea * Matt * Polly * Lucy Mark Emma Nicky * Julie *
Which by my estimations makes 7 relatively definites and 7 possibles.
On that basis, I'm going to let Hampshire know to expect at least 8, possibly more.
Hotel accommodation and booking the fort I intend to sort out this weekend, once I'm surer on numbers.
At the moment I'm assuming two cars. I understand Richard will be taking a car, is anyone else able and willing to drive down?
Thanks,
julian. |
