Hi,
this is a nice circular walk through historical Beccles and the countryside of the Waveney Valley, using footpaths, bridleways and some short stretches of road. Be prepared for some muddy stretches. We will meet at Fen Lane car park at 10.30am, and follow the river through the oldest streets of Beccles before heading out into the countryside to the southwest and then heading north, taking in some fine views before descending and crossing the floodplain and lunch at the perfectly situated riverside pub, the Locks Inn at Geldeston http://www.geldestonlocks.co.uk/ where they assure me food is served at Sunday lunchtimes despite the ambiguous message on their website. Take a look, because the menu and a gallery are on the website. This is one of the homes of the Green Jack Brewery of Lowestoft, who do some fine ales. Please note that food from outside is not permitted in the pub or their beer garden but there are nice places you could have a picnic by the river on its doorstep if you prefer to have a picnic.
Having killed off two thirds of the walk by now there's an easy walk back to Beccles along the Geldeston Dyke and the north bank of the River Waveney, which offers stunning views of Beccles on the opposite bank near the end. One or two boats will probably also be passing by if it's a nice day.
Directions for car park: A146 Norwich to Beccles (17 miles), turn right at Morrisons roundabout just after you cross the river into Suffolk (if you look right you can see the car park near the quay). Next right into Common Lane, next right into Fen Lane, follow round to the left, and next right into the car park, which is free and quite large.
Look forward to seeing you there. Nearer the time I'll contact walkers with my mobile number by email.

Correction, take first right down Common Lane into Pound Road, not Fen Lane ( the road changes names at the next corner). So, it's 1st right off A146 onto A145/George Westwood Way sign towards Beccles, 1st right down Common Lane, 1st right down Pound Road, 1st right into Fen Lane car park.
it's all here: http://www.multimap.com/maps/?qs=Beccles&countryCode=GB#map=52.4646,1.56375|17|32&bd=useful_information&loc=GB:52.45386:1.56375:14|Beccles|Beccles, Suffolk, England, NR34 9 |

Glad to see we have a few walkers already The floodplain unsurprisingly is very low lying and at certain times of year it does even flood so I will make sure I have a quick look down there before the walk. On my recce trip in Feb it was dry. If it's flooded I can vary the route to take a short cut along the Angles Way from Beccles and then following a very quiet road to cross into Norfolk at Ellingham and then mostly country road to Geldeston. The riverside path back should be ok. When I've been camping in the field we have to cross to get to the pub we shared it with a bull and 20 cows, but their interest peaked at sniffing our tents very quietly and wondering off again. In Feb there were no animals in the field but I will also keep an eye on this. It is a public footpath through there and I don't think there have ever been any problems. |

Hey,
This walk also sounds great, I'm definitely going to attend.
I live in Norwich so I'm more than happy to give up to 3 people a lift.

Great to see a good number of walkers coming on this one. The floodplain is still completely dry and cow and bull free This will be a nice place for a post walk drink in Beccles by the river http://www.waveneyhousehotel.co.uk/ |

ok, looks like 14 for certain: me, Julian, Liam, Michelle, Mark, Paula, Emma, Becky, Andrea, Matt, Julie, Fran, Adele and Tim
and two possibles: Polly and Amy
Nicky can't come anymore, so Julian please arrange a lift with someone else.
Just looked at the Met Office 5 day forecast and it's lovely and sunny up until Sunday when they reckon there might be heavy rain so don't let this lovely weather lull you into coming in your shorts and teeshirts and be prepared. If it does rain it may be muddy in some stretches. I guess we should be prepared for whatever the weather might do, and bring a drink because the pub will be the first place after leaving Beccles to get any refreshments. Oh, and don't forget a change of clothing and of footwear in case of rain and mud, especially if you want to be let into the pub in Beccles at the end!
Even if it does rain though this is a nice walk and it's not too hard work either. Look forward to seeing you all on Sunday |

Hi Julian,
Just wondering if you would like a lift from Norwich on Sunday morning?
I could pick you up on the roadside just outside the football ground opposite the swimming pool at 9.30am?

Hi Fran,
Just to confirm meeting arrangements for Sunday, can I pick you up at 9.15am.
Where is the best place to meet? I will be driving from Earlham Road so both Unthank and Newmarket Road are on my way, so whichever is easiest for you?
