Full details to follow after my recce on Thursday if all goes to plan, but advance warning of this walk, which I will aim to keep to 9-10 miles or thereabouts. Meet in Southwold at a free car park, walk along the harbour and over the footbridge into Walberswick and inland through heath and forest to 'fiveways' where we will continue through forest into Dunwich and a chance to rest in a really lovely pub, The Ship, with great garden, good food and beers, or the beach with picnics (please express a preference as we will go with the most popular). Another lunch possibility is the fish and chips restaurant on the beach but it may be very busy??? A compromise might be pub for lunch and a rest on the beach at Walberswick later on. After leaving Dunwich we will walk along the forest edge with sea views and onto Walberswick beach, with another walk along the harbour and back to Southwold.
There is a great teashop and a great pub and garden in Walberswick (The Bell) and a great harbour teashop in Southwold as well as the clifftop Lord Nelson pub in Southwold or for something different the beautifully restored pier, so late walk or after walk refreshment possibilities are numerous and I recommend planning to stay on afterwards, even if just to chill out on the beach with an ice cream. |

Hi Jon,
Thought I would just point out that David already has a walk on 7th June in Chelmondiston so a lot of people will be expecting to go on that.
You might want to move your one to a day that's free to have a good attendance.

It's OK, it's a mistake by Paula. David's walk on that date was cancelled and the date made available again.

No worries, this date was fixed up ages ago. Any number is fine by me - not looking to drag crowds around. I think on walks it's not always the case of the more the merrier, and I've really enjoyed some of the smaller group walks I've been on. Yes, this area is very pleasant, and we will take in heath, forest, hardly any road, a couple of pretty villages, a beach of golden sand at Walberswick and shingle and cliffs at Dunwich, and a working harbour full of fishing boats and yachts. I love this place. |

Of course it's ok Emma, and anyone else
Change of plan on this one: it's now Southwold and Walberswick, and not Dunwich.
This is a 9-10 mile walk, with no hills to speak of, but there will be some beautiful views.
The recce trip showed that a circular walk of all 3 places is hard work and is a good 15 miler and it was quite tiring...or should I say bloody tiring!
Now we will start and finish in Southwold and will take in the scenic river harbour, Walberswick Common and village, part of the Sandlings Walk through heath and forest, going through the reedbeds of Westwood Marshes and along the Dunwich River on the Suffolk Coastal Walk to the coast, where we will walk for a while beside the beach.
Once we hit Walberswick again we are close to the end of the walk and if people feel like it there should be an ice cream van at the car park. There will be a choice of going across the river on the rowing boat ferry at 80p an adult (dogs welcome), which is close to our car park, or doing an extra mile or so and walking back along the scenic river harbour and footbridge.
Back in Southwold there are plenty of opportunities for good ice creams and teas at the pier, a great tearoom at the harbour, a tea shack on the beach, the Lord Nelson pub on the clifftop neat the town centre, as well as many other refreshments of all types. The town centre is a short walk from our car park, but it's a very nice walk which you can do entirely along the beach. There are also lots of nice shops on the High St if that tickles you.
Because we will be going past and going through several nature reserves and it's breeding season for many species dogs must be kept on leads on some stages of the walk and these will be signposted along the way.
We will be out in the sticks when lunchtime comes along so bring a good pack up with plenty of water.
Bring a good hat, suncream and waterproofs, just in case.
Bring thick soled shoes as there will be stony paths on some stretches. Other stretches will be tarmac, gravel, grass, boardwalk and sand.
We will meet ready for a 10.30am kickoff at the free car park on Ferry Road next to a restaurant called Casa Mia, which used to be the Dutch Barn if you haven't been there for a few years.
Directions from Norwich:
A146 past Beccles to Worlingham 2nd roundabout B1127 from there to Southwold (note that at Henstead Church you need to take a right turn to keep on the B1127. You will cross over the A12 at Wrentham.
Once in Southwold head over the mini roundabout and go all the way down the High Street until you get to the square outside the Swan Hotel, where you turn right. This takes you through to Ferry Road, where the car park will appear after a while on the right next to Casa Mia.

For directions you can use this route planner, which suggests A146-Beccles A145-A1095 but watch out for some very tight bends on the A145 and A1095 where people sometimes wrap themselves around trees. http://www.theaa.com/route-planner/index.jsp There's not much between this route and my suggestion. |

Hi, I would like to come on this walk, sounds just lovely. I have only been on one walk before (well not in my life - but with the group!) and that was ages ago. Would there be any possibility of a lift from Norwich?

Would anyone be able to give me a lift from Norwich? I can drive to meet at a convenient pick up point if necessary.
Thanks Paula |

Hi Johnny
The walk sounds really good, I'm definitely going to make it.
Helen and Paula I can give you both a lift.
Helen - where do you live in Norwich? I live just off Earlham Road in the Golden Triangle.
Paula - I can pick you up near your house or the railway station.
Julian, are you planning on going?
There is one free space in my car if anyone else would like a lift.
Depending on where people live, I suggest picking up the first person about 9am but will confirm nearer the time.

Hi Adele - thanks for the offer :)
But unfortunately I can't make this walk (camping near some lake somewhere), it sounds good though - have walked much of it before and it is a lovely area. |

Jon,
Ok, I would like to join you on this walk.
I could take 2 or 3 others if lifts are still needed.
Cheers

Great - will be good to see some familiar faces again and meet some new ones Lift sharing is a good idea as it's a fair way and at a guess would take about an hour from Norwich, so last pick ups should be before 9.30. |

Hi Helen,
Just wondering if your still planning to come on the walk and whether you'd like a lift and where would be convenient to pick you up.
If any help I live in the Golden Triangle, just off Earlham Road.
My mobile number is: 07843576675
