This walk will be lead by Richard & Laurence on 11th July. It will consist of two sections, Orford Ness before lunch, and Orford after lunch. The rough details are available now, and more details will be available in 1 week, after the Reccy.
Meeting point will be the Orford Ness Quay Car Park at TM 424 496 (or IP12 2NU) for 10:30.
For the first walk we will take the ferry to Orford Ness. The charge for the ferry and entry to Orford Ness is £6.90 (unless you are a NT member, in which case it is £3.80.) Once across the water we will follow a waymarked route of about 5.5 miles. After this we will return to the mainland for lunch.
After lunch we will follow a 5.5 mile route along the water and then through Orford to return to the car park. |

| Richard, if you could find out the ferry times that would be handy as I would like at least to try and make the Orford Ness part and then unfortunately go to work. I might be able to blag it if the timings are ok. |

The ferrys are pretty frequent, but only take 12, so if there is a queue, there might be a delay.

I am off work on Saturday 11/07 and would like to participate in this walking project. So preliminary count me in pls, provided that somebody can offer a lift (i'm happy to contribute towards fuel cost).

We have now completed the Reccy, and found the day very enjoyable.
The car park, just before the quay is £3 for 8 hours. This is a lovely pub near the car park (which we return to between the morning and afternoon walks) which do great sandwiches if people want to buy their lunch.
The morning walk on Orford Ness is slighly shorter than the NT advertise, but it does have a number of fascinating buildings on it with lots of WW1 and WW2 history!
The afternoon walk is very pleasant with some river walking at the start and a bit of woodland at the end. The final part of the walk passes Orford Castle if people want even more culture!
Laurence and I look forward to seeing you next Saturday.

| I won't hold you to it Richard, but any rough idea of what time we ought to arrive back in Orford after the first walk? Still hoping to make it. |

Eimear:
There are already a couple of people told me they are coming (by phone rather than forum) so the date will hold, but I'd be happy to run this again in a while if people want it.
Jonny:
I would expect us to be back on the quay by 13:30, but the area on the other side is quite small, so you could easily get back ahead of the rest of us if required.

| I would like to go on this walk if it was put on again as I can't make this Saturday, friends of ours went on a guided tour there (bird spotting) and said it was a barren but strangely beautiful place. |

Ah good old Orford Ness. When I was a whippersnapper back in my Army days I was posted to the Atomic Weapons Research Establishment and worked in the pagodas there, testing the triggers for nuclear weapons.
Don't worry it is all safe now though wish I could make it, it's a bleak yet endearing landscape. |

I hope you can make the next one then, Gordon. A guided tour by a man on the inside would be good |

Pretty sure it says on the NT site that it's closed on Sundays, which seems surprising. Perhaps it's to give the wildlife a day off? The timings may well not work out for me, Richard, so don't wait for me if I'm not there at the right time. |

Just to confirm that Jon is correct, Orford Ness is closed on Sundays. Therefore whilst I am happy to run this again later in the year, it would again be on a Saturday.
Whatever happens, this Saturday's walk will be taking place.
