I am still very keen to do a trip to the Lake District and the original trip suggested by Julian and Richard looks unlikely to happen. Several people expressed interest in that trip and hopefully they are still keen. I know Clive said he still wanted to go and after chatting on yesterday's walk, we came up with the following cunning plan:
Leave on Friday morning (after rush hour, about 9.30am), climb Scafell Pike on Saturday, Helvelyn on Sunday and drive back on Monday. I suggest staying in a YHA so we can use the NYWG's membership card but others are welcome to stay elsewhere if they prefer. Any suggestions on YHAs in the area are welcome as my memory from a short trip 10 years ago are sketchy..... I will therefore make sure I take the relative maps, etc!
The weekends suggested are:
Friday - Monday 16th - 19th Oct 23rd - 26th Oct 30th - 2nd Nov
Please post below if you are interested in coming along and which weekend(s) you would prefer. As the first weekend is only 9 weeks away we need to book asap, therefore we will go with the majority's availability postings made on or before next Monday, 24th August.
Thanks Paula |

Hi Paula
I definitely can't commit to this .. I will be needed for emergency child care when my ex-wife goes into Labour sometime around the 25th October ..

| Can't commit, but might possibly be up for that last weekend - it's the only one listed when I'm not working. Don't work around me though, as it's too early to tell for me. I get a bit of vertigo as well, so some routes up Scaffell wouldn't suit me, such as up Lords Rake. |

Nah, it's much more fun going in a group and having a laugh!
I'm sure we can settle on one of those 3 weekends with at least a carful of people, if not two.

| Oh dear- if we can do the 9th of October that would be first class, but I am not too fussed as Hadrian's Wall will do me walking wise before I go on hol for two weeks in Spain at end of October. |

Sorry Liam, no can do.
The 3 weekends mentioned above are the best ones for Clive (and me too) so can't budge on them.
Hope you can come though - you would be a good packhorse for carrying extra water up the mountains. Only kidding!

| Hi Paula, Not sure that I can make any of the weekends proposed but you were asking about YHA's in the area. As someone who knows the lake District well I would suggest the YHA in Keswick as this is central to the two peaks you suggest doing, although this would depend on which routes you were thinking of tackling them by. Although I have not stayed there for a few years The YHA in Keswick was always one of the better ones and the town has all the facilities you would need. In response to Clive's post in general chat I would say that from a personal point of view the pubs in Keswick have the edge over Ambleside, The YHA in Ambleside is also a good one although depending on routes you have in mind not as central to the peaks you are talking about. Clive's post from the General Chat section:
I"ve sampled the pubs in Ambleside on previous visits, they"re not too bad,not too noisey and not too quiet, not quite wetherspoon prices, but a nice little town, all the same. Was going to stay in keswick last year but due to a technical hitch,i didn"t! So not sure what it has to offer. |

| I can't make any of these weekends but I have stayed in Keswick many times over the past few years and it is excellent. Lots of pubs and many different restaurants to choose from. Definitely has more on offer than Ambleside. I always camped and stayed in rented cottages so cannot comment on any other type of accommodation. |

Any more takers for this? It would be nice to go with a car full of people.
The decision on what weekend the trip will go ahead will be made on Monday/Tuesday.

I am not 100% certain yet, but 16th to 19th would be the best for me if I do go.
FYI the NYWG's membership of the YHA expired some time ago, and was not renewed as YHs have raher fallen out of favour with the group in favour of PremierInn. That said I notice there is a lack of PremierInns in the area.

Hello Paula
I hope I haven't missed the deadline for the planning, but I have asked the wife and she seems to think it would be OK for me to go to the Lake District on the 30th October to 2nd November.
Hope this is OK.

Thanks for the advice on accommodation - I'd much rather go on recommendation than guesswork!
It looks like most people have gone for the weekend of 16 - 19 October. I phoned YHA Keswick and YHA Derwent Water (which are the two closest to Scafell Pike and Helvellyn). Unfortunately, they both don't have availability for that weekend but they do for the following weekend (23 - 26 October). I have therefore made a booking in both hostels for what they have available and will confirm once I have heard from everyone.
Option A - YHA Keswick. Two 3 bedded rooms, one for guys and one for girls. £21.95 pppn (per person per night) which includes breakfast (cooked and non-cooked).
Option B - YHA Derwent Water. 4 beds booked in 2 separate dormitories, 4 male and 4 female. £17.95 pppn (breakfast not included).
I think most people will go for Option A but I am keeping Option B open in case we have 8 people keen on coming along. It might be worth renewing the Group's YHA membership as the above prices are for members only. Non-members would have to pay an extra £3 pppn.
I have no idea what it would cost in petrol but I've checked AA Route Planner and Norwich to Keswick is 275 miles and we will car share as much as possible to bring the cost down.
Please post below if you are keen on taking up one of the places (maximum 4 guys and 4 girls) as I need to confirm with both hostels by Friday (28 August). These places will go on a first come first served basis and the hostels will need full payment to be made when booking.
For confirmation, this is for the weekend of 23 - 26 October (3 nights).
Thanks Paula

Oh good news on that date- I will be flying up from Newquay to Carlisle as I will be working in Cornwall that week. Will then taxi across to the start at Keswick.

I can't do that weekend, but it seems like a very good idea to renew the group's YHA membership if it's not too expensive.

What a shame- I was looking forward to this, but never mind.
Looks like I will just to go with the UEA Rock Climbing Club in November.
