Hi everyone,

this should be a lovely walk, which circuits the countryside around Bungay, taking in parts of the Waveney Valley and the wooded Bath Hills, and there should be a nice pub stop at Earsham, where they apparently brew their own beer:

Some brief details of the area here. There is a fair bit of historical interest too:

I would like us to start at 10.30am in Bungay. Full details TBA after I do the recce on Monday

I did the recce today and it's a very nice walk. The distance is officially 10 miles for the Bigod Way but there is an opportunity at the end to cut about a mile off, which would avoid a short stretch of dodgy road with no footpath as well as a field of cows, so that's what we'll probably do.
That would mean the walk would be a cow free one, as long as things stay as they are. Dogs can come, but will have to be on a lead at times, as there are signs in places.

We'll be doing the route anticlockwise, and with a pubstop and grubstop it should take under 5 hours, so we'll be finishing before 4pm, being conservative. I did it in 4 1/2 hrs today but I did the whole route and ate lunch on the move although I couldn't miss a pint at the Queens Head in Earsham - it's a non poncy, small pub and is a great place to drink from a choice of 3 good ales from their Waveney Brewery as well as one from Nethergate. Bring a packed lunch though because it didn't appear they do food and it seems some walkers prefer to bring their own food anyway.

Quite a bit of the total route is under tree cover and there are great views from elevated positions at Bath Hills and from Mettingham. It's mostly tracks and paths with some quiet roads but there is one freshly ploughed field to cross, which was crunchy underfoot today, despite light rain.

Bring good walking shoes and waterproofs, food and drink.

Meet at Bungay Staithe car park at 10.30am.

Directions from Norwich:

take the Poringland/Brooke/Woodton road south and when you hit the A143 at Ditchingham roundabout turn right.

at the next roundabout on the A143 turn left and continue along the same street into Bungay town centre.

at the mini roundabout take the second exit into Trinity St and continue past the church on your right and follow the road as it bends left into Staithe Road.

100 yds or so on your left you'll see a grass triangle. Turn left here and follow the road into the carpark at the Riverside Centre, which is a dead end. Parking is free and safe.

Hope to see you there.

Thanks Jonny, I agree was a nice walk ,and good to sample some beer
from a local brewery I had not come across before. Was also good to see the scenery from the first canoe trip from the landward side
of the river. Ian
