Hi,

I have yet to recce this on foot but I have pored over an Explorer map and worked out a circular route which takes in about 5 miles of the Upper Tas Valley Walk and then comes back via footpaths, tracks and minor roads to make a circle.

Our walk will take in parts of the parishes of East Carleton, Mulbarton, Bracon Ash and Ketteringham, just southwest of Norwich, starting and finishing at Mulbarton, where there is a pub, the World's End.

We will meet to start the walk at 10.30am and I'll suggest a parking place once I've been there, and we will have a packed lunch along the route. Our route will take us close to the Lotus test track at Hethel so we may even see some cars there.

Hope to see some of you there.

Hi Jonny,
I'm hoping to be there. I was planning to lead a walk in this area. You've saved me carrying out a recce :)

I'd potentially like to come on this walk Jon - that is if I'm still able to walk after your 24 mile bike ride the day before. Certain muscles needed for cycling haven't been used for a good few months.....!

. . . . I might also be able to bring along a couple of friends and potential members too. Probably depends on the weather and hangover level.

Having done the recce today we will meet at the car park in front of Mulbarton Village Hall, which is on the Common. Coming from Norwich go past the Worlds End pub on the main road on your right and turn left at the Common, which is the next main turning on your left, ie not residential street. You can't really miss it, as the Common is a very large open piece of land in the middle of the village and that's where you turn left. The car park is 300m past the church on the left. There are recycling bins in the car park, so you can easily see it as you approach, and parking is free.

Please get there so we can start walking at 10.30am.

The route is a bit muddy in places, but not overly so, and is not hilly, and we are mainly walking through farm fields and along some lengths of quiet country roads. No livestock in fields today, despite a 'beware of the bull' sign. The roads are certainly much easier to walk on than rainsoaked ploughed fields where the ''public footpath'' sign points to a sea of mud, so you won't have any rubbish like that to bother with, as I revised my chosen route in 2 or 3 places to avoid such nonsense.

At Hethel we go past the Lotus factory, showroom and alongside the test track, where you can hear cars driving fast, but unfortunately they have a high fence and hedging so you can't see the track. This was a large US bomber base in WW2 and we'll pass a couple of memorials to them.

The walk isn't suitable for dogs, as the public right of way is restricted in places and it's clear wandering dogs would be most unwelcome from some of the signs.

Beautiful day today, and hope it will be on Sunday, but come prepared for foul weather, and wear walking boots, otherwise you'll slide all over the place.

Some nice nature along the way - snowdrops in the woods, a large rookery, and deer - a herd of 30-40 ran across a field in front of me.

Please bring a packed lunch and a drink, as we won't be going near any pubs (or cafes, or shops) until we get back to Mulbarton, where at the end we could go for a drink at the pub. They have a large car park there so we should drive there from the end of the walk.

I can give a lift to anyone in the Unthank Rd or Eaton areas only.

See you on Sunday, if not on the cycle ride on Saturday.
