Hi there, this will be a walk of around 9 miles starting from Fen Lane carpark in Beccles and will take us out into the Suffolk countryside west and across the floodplain into Norfolk and lunch at the lovely Locks Inn at Geldeston.
Please don't eat packed lunches in the pub garden like many did last time! It's not allowed and there are signs up. If you want to have a pack up you can be yards away and arguably have an even nicer place on the riverbank and no one will feel offended!
I have to find out if the river path back to Beccles on the Norfolk side is closed, because I remember Adele saying it might be....Adele, please reply here if you see this! If it is we will follow part of the Angles Way back to Beccles, which will be a route we've not done before.
So come along if you want a nice yomp with some great scenery and the chance of a nice pint and great grub at the legendary Locks Inn.
Start at 10.30 at Fen Lane. It's a free carpark. A146 to Beccles, turn left at Morrisons roundabout, next right into Common Lane, next right and entrance is just around the corner before Beccles Quay and marina (if you miss that you need to go to Specsavers).
I'm not taking bookings for food, but the grub there is very good, and they have baguettes for 5-6 quid plus lots of hot food for a bit more, all under a tenner pretty much. |

Hi Johnny,
You're right to think that the footpath on the (floodbank) North side of the River Waveney is currently closed from Geldeston Boat Dyke to Boathouse Hill Cottages, adjacent to Gillingham Marshes (several km north of Beccles), so I'm afraid you'll have to use an alternative route. The footpath is closed as the improvement works to the flood defences in that area are currently underway and it is considered to be a construction site; it will likely remain closed until sometime in 2011 as and when the vegetation has re-established to provide a suitable footpath surface.
For further information on the footpath closures currently in place, please refer to Broadland Flood Alleviation Project (BFAP) website, www.bfap.org. The details of the closures are available on the Footpaths & Public Access page (accessed via the link on the Environmental Issues tab). On the left hand side of the page, you can then choose to view the maps for either Compartment 25 Gillingham Marshes or Compartment 25a Geldeston Marshes. Unfortunately, the footpath closures don't seem to be listed on NCC Countryside Access website, eventhough its NCC that issue the closure notices! http://www.countrysideaccess.norfolk.gov.uk/news.aspx
I also fully recommend the food and ale at the Geldeston Locks pub and should be able to make the walk; I'll confirm for definite later in the week.

| Great, thanks a lot for the info, Adele, and see you then hopefully. That means we will cross back into Suffolk after lunch and return via part of the Angles Way, which will not be along the same route we took earlier. |

Hi folks
I will try to make this one - tragically my dad died last weekend - so I was going to have a quiet couple of weeks away from it all.
But on second thoughts he absolutely loved the Geldeston Locks pub and we spent many summer holidays moored up there on his boat, exploring the broads. I can't think of a nicer tribute to him than to go and have a romp round the countryside - even if it turns into a bit of a tearful pilgrimage for me.

I will be there on Sunday Jon with a potentially new member.
Lynn - so sorry to hear about your Dad. We can help you make a toast to your Dad with a drink, or two.
